"Every house where love abides
And friendship is a guest,
Is surely home, and home sweet home
For there the heart can rest."

Visitors!

Some visitors are welcome to a home...

Like this toad! We have so many toads in our back garden including lots of sweet little baby ones. When we are out doing work in the garden, we suddenly see them jump from a plant. We also have a frog which hangs around in the front garden since it seems to like to use the large drinking bowl for the birds.

And hedgehogs are always welcome! What is it about seeing a hedgehog in the evenings that does something magical. This Mrs. Tiggywinkle was not so pleased that we followed her with my camera to take a photo though.

But this visitor was very, very unwelcome!!! This past weekend, I had just brushed my teeth and went to get into bed early to read. I was greeted by this big spider smiling down over the headboard at me. I screamed for Jos to come get it. It was huge (about 4 inches width) and I just could not get into bed after Jos sucked him up in the sweeper. I said I wanted to go upstairs and sleep in the guest room but Jos said his girlfriend was probably up there. Men are no help! So I came back out in the living room and picked up my crocheting to get my mind off it. An hour later, I feel asleep staring above the headboard hoping that this spider had no family members on the look out for him.

We also have a hedgehog in our garden and he's very welcome as he eats a couple of slugs each - and we have many of them during this wet summer.
Unfortunately we also have these unwelcome visitors. I just don't like them, particularly the big black ones. And now it's the time that they get into the house, somehow ...

i've never seen a hedgehog! How cute. Do they destroy the garden or are they a welcomed visitor?

Okay, I heard about this 'GIANT' spider. On first telling, you said it was a meter long. I know you stuffed newspaper in the sweeper so he couldn't get out.
Now Mrs. Tiggy Winkle is just sooo cute. I have never seen a real one. Keep her for a pet.
The "Oh Toad" is also from one of the Wind in the Willows books.
You know of course, the spider could be from the song, The Itsy Bitsy Spider. You could have put him out by the water spout. Hahaha.
Love you Silly Sally Pickles,
Hugs Mom

Poor you, not allowed in the guest room. I am glad you did get some sleep at last!

Hi Heidi, wish we had hedgehogs here in the US. Also, not a fan of spiders!! eck!

Finally had a few minutes to get caught up with your blog, love the idea and things you and Jos have done.

Oh my goodness Heidi! I would've freaked out with that big spider too- hope he wasn't a brown recluse. Don't know if they have those in Holland or not. EEK! I'm not crazy about toads but not really afraid of them...and I have never ever seen a hedgehog so it's exciting to see your photos. Are they common there? I'm not sure where they are native in the U.S. - I never saw one when I lived in the midwest for 35 years and never here in the southwest either. We only have the stuffed toy hedgies for our dogs lol.

Hihi, you are a heroe! What would have happened when Jos wasn't there, I wonder ... ;)

Have a great weekend!
