"Every house where love abides
And friendship is a guest,
Is surely home, and home sweet home
For there the heart can rest."

A toadstool...or perhaps not?

Every once in a while, you pass by a very special toadstool. One that you just have to stop and take a closer look. This weekend, I saw just that very one in Assen. It is the largest vliegenzwam or fly agaric I have ever seen. It was about 8 or 9 inches across.

So Jos turned the car around so I could jump out and take some photos. It was perfectly in tact still which is amazing as it was next to a bus stop.

There were two 'normal' sized ones on each side of it but this one was just so unbelievable and beautiful. Is it simply a toalstool or perhaps......

NDER a toadstool crept a wee Elf,
Out of the rain to shelter himself.

Under the toadstool, sound asleep,
Sat a big Dormouse all in a heap.
Trembled the wee Elf, frightened and yet
Fearing to fly away lest he get wet.

To the next shelter--maybe a mile!
Sudden the wee Elf smiled a wee smile.

Tugged till the toadstool toppled in two.
Holding it over him, gaily he flew.

Soon he was safe home, dry as could be.
Soon woke the Dormouse--"Good gracious me!

"Where is my toadstool?" loud he lamented.
--And that's how umbrellas first were invented.

~ Oliver Herford (1893 - 1935)

Isn't that the sweetest poem? Humm...I am thinking perhaps this is not simply a poem but a true story about how the first umbrella was invented. What do you think? Of course, it does mean that you must believe in elves too. *grins*

Excuse my support glove on my hand as I took the photo and did not think to take it off first. I wanted to show you how large the toadstool is. I have long hands and I did not quite span the length of the surface.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, I love it. There should be NO DOUBT,in anyones mind that there are gnomes under these beautiful toadstools. That one is a gem. It is just too bad you can't bring them home and dry them or something.
Love you, Mom

Allemachtig wat een plaatje. Roos en ik zijn de hele middag op zoek geweest tijdens de paddestoelendag in Bennebroek en geen één vliegenzwam gezien. Jouw post maakt dat weer helemaal goed.

I have never seen any toadstool like that!!! And when I clicked on your photos, to enlarge them... It is even more magnificent.

It almost resembles the 'skin' of a strawberry.

As someone else commented.... Oh yes, there has to be something magical about that one. Well, about all 3 of them. Huge, is one unique aspect. And Red, is another.

And yes, the poem is precious.

Wat een echte paddestoel! Rood met witte stippen en dan ook nog zo mooi glimmend. Kon die Elf niet samen met het muisje schuilen? LOL.( Ps wat betekent: wee en heap?)

I did not know toadstools could grow that big in real life, just in childrens stories

I think your mom is right, it is for sure big enough to be home for some gnomes, but I am sure they won't mind at all that you shared it with all of us. :)

I've never in my life seen a toadstool with those colors! I thought it wasn't real! What's so wonderful is that we stop to notice and appreciate these things in nature. There was a time in my life when I just plunged straight ahead and wouldn't have seen such a beautiful thing!

wow - you must have great eyesight Heidi, but as red as that toadstool was I am not surprised that it jumped out at you. It reminds me of a ripe strawberry in the spring - very beautiful shroom :o)

Heidi,
What an amazing sight and one that would look more at home in an Arthur Rackham illustration than in a real life setting. You must have felt so priviledged to have come upon it. The colours are just stunning.
Isn't it a delight to know that there is a poem there to suit every interesting picture - the trick is to find it and you, my dear Heidi, have the uncanny talent of being able to do just that :>)
I love poems and pictures together, it must be the child in me :>)
