In 1835, Squire Jan Anne Lycklama á Nijeholt moved into this mansion on the Hoofdstraat 80. There was a garden in the back of the house but also one on the opposite side of the street. It is in this garden in 1869 that he built a grapery and greenhouse in the gardens. The house is now the Town Hall but the garden opposite are now open to the public.

There are 4 greenhouse structures in all on the site. One is a coffee house, one a place for plants from the garden to overwinter, one seen on the collage below for tropical plants...
...and one which is the grapery. This is a clever construction in its simplicity. It has a sloping glass roof with little openings at the bottom for grape vine roots to be planted in. This allows the roots to remain outside gathering rain while inside heat is created by the glass roof and bright white wall.
There was a pretty pond full of water lilies in full bloom as you walk up to the gardens. I was taken with a set of beautiful pots, one which can be seen in photo 3. It was a piece of art.
I am being the ant. It summer and warm sunshine is in the sky. Most might have their thoughts turned to being outside and play but I am preparing for the coming autumn and winter chills. I had some yarn in my stash waiting for this project. I am making a shell stripe afghan. I will simply continue until I have used all the yarn that I had in my stash with these colors. I wanted to create something delicate by using the shell stitch yet rustic at the same time which works with the cream, light grey, beige and dark grey combination.
Are you an ant or a grasshopper? *wink*
My Aunt Ruthie died this morning in Ohio. It is Memorial Day there. I find it a bittersweet thought that she passed away on this very day. She was 81 years old.

She has passed on to join her husband, my Uncle Ralph who went before her. They are seen together here in this photo.

But today is also sad for my mother who lost a sister. She lost her oldest sister a number of years ago but still had Ruthie. And Ruthie had her baby sister 'Rag Legs'. They had 9 years between them. This photo is was of them when my mother was a very little girl.

Back in 1995, I lost my only sister. I went afterwards to visit Ruthie with my mother. We sat talking about funny family stories and I loved watching the two sisters laughing together. I still have the picture of them becoming older together and feeling so sad that I would never become old with my own sister. I enjoyed this part of them. I have no recent photos of the two of them so here is a less distant blast from the past with my mother on the left and Aunt Ruthie on the right...
So to my mother...
I know how your heart feels today!
This year, it was going to be exciting to see how our plants would do since we had an extreme frost period in the late winter. Our planting was so new that I was worried about loosing a good deal of things. We however have only lost a few things and now I am going through and picking out spots that needed different planting or replanting in different areas. I have a front and back garden in this house but here is the start of the growing season from one angle in the back.

We have created various areas to sit. There is a terrace at the house and one on the other side of the path through the pergola. I like this area as it is shady in the mornings. I also created two benches among the garden plants using the concrete blocks we removed from other areas. There are stepping stones enabling you to walk all the way around the garden amongst the plants. This bench is in a corner over by the rhododendron. It will eventually become covered on the front with ivy. I have cushions in my quilt studio to take out and place on the bench when we want to go sit there. I have to move the bird bath but have not gotten to creating a pot stack to sit it on. Another project yet to do...
The rhododendrons is in the height of its bloom here in our city garden while the one I showed you at Cranberry Cottage on a previous post is already faded and dropped its blossoms. What a shame the season for rhododendrons is so short!
I love the language of flowers from the Victorian era. I however am puzzled at the meaning of rhododendrons.....agitation, danger and beware. Somehow I cannot see this meaning in these pretty blossoms unless I must beware of the danger of becoming agitated with the drunken beauty of these flowering shrubs. *grins*Heidihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00060822757546401667noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5705614339233542950.post-28468622813053491862012-05-16T06:21:00.000-07:002012-05-16T06:22:53.273-07:00Garden visitorsIt is spring and although Holland is not having warm enough weather, the garden is slowing awakening...

But these surprise visitors give it soul! Last night, Jos said to me there is a duck walking among the flowers. I said there cannot be. We are not on the water anymore. I miss the ducks from our old house. He was right! This couple decided to come to visit and are back again today. They come up to my window looking at me with head's cocked sideways as if to say 'Come outside and feed us again please.' It is fun to have garden visitors!

We also have unwanted visitors in droves in the form of dandelions. Jos has been going through the garden digging them out by the deepest part of their roots to ensure they cannot return. In doing so he broke our little trowel. It was one with a cheap plastic handle. He did his own make do and mend by getting a branch from the woods in just the right diameter to use as a new handle for now...
And our Sunday sip? We had lunch on our newly cleaned terrace even though it is chilly and we have to wear sweaters. It is May and we really want to enjoy the garden. Afterwards, we had a cup of coffee while watching the birds...particularly a pair of robins...darting about between our clippings and the bird feeder. Pure bliss on a Sunday afternoon!
What are you sipping this Sunday? Heidihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00060822757546401667noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5705614339233542950.post-45239042872193405272012-05-03T03:43:00.000-07:002012-05-04T02:42:33.453-07:00Pink roses.....On April 4th, Jos and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. We received flowers from friends and I just could not part with them. So this bouquet of roses was sorted to pick out the wilting roses and I rearranged the once large bouquet to a small bouquet in a pretty glass vase. When you have a bouquet that is starting to look sad, it is a great way to bring new life into it by pulling out what is wilted and reworking with what you have...

Since the bouquet is smaller, I looked around the house for a few bits and pieces to use with the flowers on a tray giving it more impact on our coffee table. I placed a piece of lace with a shoe pincushion, wooden spools with lace, glass votives with tea lights and an oil lamp. Unfortunately it still has a golden color oil from the winter season in it but I like having this height in the tray and the three flames as evening falls.
Yes...that is right...I am drinking my Yorkshire tea with milk once again with a slice of delicious Dutch spice gingerbread. I have some good reading to do and nothing tastes better with my issue of the British Country Living than a soothing cup of tea.
Jos had been in England for his work a little over a week ago and brought me back a number of my favorite things...

More magazines to read...
Yorkshire tea...
Birds instant custard...
Sticky toffee pudding...
Favorite cookies - bourbon creams, custard creams and shortbread...

What do you enjoy doing with your late hours of the afternoon?

All photos were taken at the open air museum of Warffum, Groningen.Heidihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00060822757546401667noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5705614339233542950.post-14648849164747305452012-04-15T06:49:00.000-07:002012-04-15T06:49:29.468-07:00A heart of iron......wrought iron, that is! Anyone who has read my blog regularly knows that I just love anything of wrought iron. Every once in a while, you stumble onto a piece of it and know you have to bring it home with you. This happened while we were staying at Cranberry Cottage the week before Easter. We went to a tiny village called Warffum to visit the open air museum and walked past this blacksmith shop. You can see more of Ron Caspers' work here.

Seeing all those beauties outside pulled us in to ask about buying something that caught my eye. But then once inside, it was pure pleasure to discover this wonderful work space.
Did I bring something home with me? Yes! I spied this old rusted piece of possibly a fence or balcony railing. I am not sure that the smith did not think I was nuts as he seemed not used to selling any of the old left over bits from his restoration work but this is what I wanted. Just look at the beautiful detail!
Jos sunk an old piece of post we had and laid a few bricks under the area where the gate would fall. I now have an eye catcher at the end of my new little herb garden. There are two valerian plants just on the other side. This herb grows to a good height and the gate will add stability plus give it a nice backdrop. I just love it!
Thank you everyone for your comments on my last post. The response was very touching and much appreciated! I have been to see the specialist here at my own hospital. He is running some tests but there is a good chance we will never know what made my body react as it did. The length of time for the reaction could mean it is not food related. I will know more in 3 weeks. In the meantime, he has given me an emergency kit with 4 medications to use if it happens again to keep it from getting dangerous before an ambulance can get to me.
On Saturday, I awoke with a major rash. I have chronic urticaria due to my Hashimoto's Disease but have never had the rash this bad. Other than it being extremely uncomfortable, I just went on with my day. By the time it was evening and we had eaten, I was starting to feel worse and decided to go to bed very early with my Kindle to read. I thought the distraction would do me good. I fell asleep in no time and when Jos came to bed at 11:30pm, I woke up feeling worse and Jos said I looked worse too. I was literally a fire engine of burning rash from the back of my skull and face to the tops of my feet. But worse was the my throat was closing up. We decided it was best to call the doctor's post for evenings and weekends emergencies. She talked to Jos and then asked if I could talk on the phone. She told Jos she was sending a doctor to Cranberry Cottage immediately. But then she called back and said they decided it was not a good idea and they already dispatched an ambulance.
Praises to those two men that came here as they acted quickly and swiftly putting in an IV while I was laying in my bed and quickly injected medication. I had very low blood pressure and was going into anaphylactic shock. I am convinced I was only minutes from passing out so they came just in time. I was placed in the ambulance and started to improve rapidly even to the point of being able to talk above a whisper again. I thought a quick check in the hospital and I would be on my way back to the cottage.

What ended up happening was a second attack once I got to the hospital and a second injection. These injections are extremely painful for me because of my having severe fibromyalgia. In fact, the nurse had to stop the second injection and dilute it in salt water with the IV drip to get the medication into my body. The injections alone were sending me into shock with my blood pressure dropping rapidly.

They finally were able to move me into a hospital room...the last they had open and I had a third attack but it was decided not to give me a third injection as it would not be good for my kidneys.

The doctor allowed me to come home but the rash will continue for a while. It is evening and starting to burn profusely again so we are keeping an eye on it but I need to give it time. I also have to contact a couple of my specialists in my own hospital as the doctor here recommended they start to look into it more.

I was treated this morning with a little pastry in the hospital and a little cupcake liner with a chick and chocolate eggs. I brought it home for Jos to enjoy since I had the pastry. Not exactly what I had planned for Easter morning.
This time of year reminds me once again of the sweet children's verse by A.A. Milne...

"She wore her yellow sun-bonnet,
She wore her greenest gown,
She turned to the south wind,
And curtsied up and down.

She turned to the sunlight,
And shook her yellow head,
And whispered to her neighbor:
'Winter is dead.' "

I took these photos this week at the OpenLucht Museum (Open Air Museum) of Warffum in Groningen.
When I was a little girl, I loved going to school. I remember sometimes during summer vacation, plopping myself down on the couch exclaiming to my mother that I was bored and wanted to go to school. *grins* Did you like going to school?Heidihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00060822757546401667noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5705614339233542950.post-10842999638977327862012-04-01T08:46:00.000-07:002012-04-01T08:50:03.025-07:00Sunday sip.....I am Mary and here are all my little lambs.....

We took a nice walk today at the Dwingelderveld National Park. Just a short walk as the north wind was really blowing. We went from the visitors center to the Ruiner sheep herd and barns. They had just been out in the heather fields and the herder was bringing them back into the barn. It is a busy time as it is lambing season. Just look and listen to all those lambs in the front barn.....

After our walk, we stopped at De Huiskamer in Ansen for our Sunday sip. It was a bowl of Drentse mustard soup with thin slices of authentic Drentse droge worst (spicy dry sausage). The combination of flavors was so tasty. They served it with warm bread. My sip? A glass of Sauvignon Blanc while Jos had a beer fresh from the tap. Just the thing to warm us up.....
I gave it a simple look again now for spring. I switched the cloth to a piece of bobbin lace with butterflies and kept the candlestick. I added a birdhouse, bird and nest with eggs.
I found this quote online and feel like it is something I could have said myself being such a homebody. In Holland, we say you are a sparrow and the Dutch for sparrow has the word home in it - "huismus"...
She was the apple of her daddy's eye and he loved taking lots of photos of her...

I have it on the best authority (her mother) that Nancy grew up very spoiled as the youngest child in the family...

He was 7 years older than her but he kept asking her out. She thought he was an old man but finally did go out with him. She received a Christmas gift from him of an album of the musical Carousel in 1956...
That was it...it was too late...she was in love and she married her Bill...

They left for a life in the military. You see Bill went into the Air Force...

Nancy and Bill had 4 children. Bill was the oldest, followed by Fawn. Then 5 years later, Heidi came along and remained the baby, until 3 years later, Eric arrived. The family was complete...

But as each story has an ending, Bill passed away all too soon at the age of only 59. He is still missed by the family to this day. How could you not miss someone who was fondly called Bear by his family?
As soon as I read the details, I had to join up. It is called the 366 Challenge. Here are Gayle's rules for the challenge...

***We're getting rid of clothes that don't fit, items that don't suit our taste anymore, projects we've given up on, books we've already read, kitchen items that won't fit in our cupboards, things we were crazy to purchase in the first place. Anything we no longer use or want.

We can gift things to friends who are collectors, donate things to favorite charities, sell things in a garage sale, toss broken things in the trash, etc... We can get rid of 7 things each week or 31 things each month. One way or another our closets, drawers and basements will be feeling lighter by the end of this year.***

I am working on this one area at a time to start myself off. This week, I decided to focus on my hutch. The nice thing about a large hutch and closed areas and drawers is that you can just stuff things in. Not seen...not really there? But I had cleaned this out really well when we moved into this house and then let stuff build up once again. Today, I opened the first (double doors) two doors of the bottom. This is a before photo of things thrown in. Mr first task was to remove everything at once and clean out both shelves.

This old clock was there as I thought it was no longer working. I kept putting in batteries and it would not keep time. My friend Sonja gave me a set of rechargable batteries for Christmas and I put those in yesterday to see if that made a difference as I would put the clock in the throw out pile today when I get started if it did not work. Guess what? IT WORKS! Obviously, the batteries I kept putting in it were not good. I have the same problem with a clock I stitched at Cranberry Cottage and need to try it with that one too. I am thrilled about this as the clock was rather expensive and I do love it.

Another thing that was dug out is this pretty porcelain tray that Jos bought for me as a 20th anniversary gift in a favorite furniture shop of ours in Maastricht. It seems only yesterday that we were there but in a few weeks it is our 25th wedding anniversary already. I am going to use this in my quilt studio for little sewing necessities instead of hiding it away.

Ta-da! Here are the results of an hour's sorting. I tossed a few old yucky looking faux pastries and sorted through some old placemats and coaster sets which are now listed online for sale. I put the items I use back in place neat and organized so they are easily found to be used.

Much of what was messing up this area was stacks of old cards that I was keeping thinking I might someday use but someday has never come...
Old address book that I do not need to keep...
Some brand new cards and Christmas cards that I need to keep in an area with other cards to use...
Empty jam jars which were leftover from a project last year...

All these items should not have been in the hutch and once again I have a really good amount of space. Tomorrow, I am planning on tackling the third door. Well...who knows...Jos is late tonight so I might even do it later on today...grins.

Speaking of husbands...do not do this challenge when they are around. Mine saw the dish with the broken lid and has pulled it out of my toss stack to fix it. Now I had to take it back off my list of items. I think a husband could bring the success of the 366 Challenge in danger. *wink*

If you want to join up, go to Gayle's blog and let her know. I am keeping my list of items on my side bar for anyone interested in seeing it.Heidihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00060822757546401667noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5705614339233542950.post-24319122979957051342012-03-11T13:04:00.002-07:002012-03-11T13:29:41.093-07:00Sunday sip.....We had a beautiful day here in Holland so lets take the Sunday sip outside in the sunshine...

We had a light lunch out in the garden today since we were very busy planting and pruning. Jos had to work away at removing dead bamboo while I planted up 4 containers of pansies and started a little spring pruning. We are nowhere near done and it will be another full weekend of pruning to get things in shape for the new season.

We enjoyed a lunch of Turkish bread, olives, sate grilled sausage and a cocktail glass with fresh pineapple chunks. To wash it down, our Sunday sip was freshly made lemonade.

We find this drink so refreshing. I take about a 1/4 cup of sugar in a liter of cold water. Then add a lemon freshly squeezed and be sure it is stirred well. Some might need a bit more sugar but we like the sour edge to ours.

Tip: To get much more juice out of your lemon, smack onto the counter and roll a couple of times to soften before cutting up to squeeze. It really does help!

We love Clairette de Die. We would much prefer it to champagne. This sparkling white wine is not allowed to be called champagne as it is from the Rhone Valley region of France. It has a full and fruity flavor which Jos thought would compliment the Chinese noodles dish I was making for dinner.
On top of being the perfect match to the dish, we decided it would be nice to round off the weekend. Jos has just had a very busy few weeks at work. He has been working extremely long days. In fact, the last text message came in for him at 11:57pm on Friday night. That rounded up the proposal he was working on and now it is time for him to wait. Hopefully he will have a more relaxed time for a couple of weeks as he awaits word on the project going to the next step.
My homemade hot fudge on vanilla ice cream topped with a scattering of peanuts. And now I am off to sit with my feet up and a cup of tea in hand while I watch a favorite show on German television about outdoor life called LandlustTV.
Small changes are taking place in our home. I am washing my sheets only to make my bed up with my spring and summer quilt today. I also have put out my St. Patrick's Day decorations.

My small dough bowl in the living room has two of my shamrocks with a March pinkeep I made. I thought it was fun to keep the ones with the text 'Kiss me...I'm Irish' separate.

In the entrance way, the large dough bowl holds the other five calico shamrocks and a green faux wreath. It is definitely shamrock love in my home. *grins*
Yes...spring is in the air. It is getting darker later and later and there is a feeling that the garden wants to spring forth but still sleeps. Soon...very soon.
I had three health related appointments this week two of which to do with my thyroid problems. It is possible that it is growing again and an ultrasound has been scheduled for April to have a look at how things are going. I also had a day out with friends. So Sunday came upon me rather quickly and here it is time for my Sunday sip...

I started our Sunday morning out making coddled eggs in a ramekin with toast. You can find the recipe on my food blog by clicking here. We always drink "cafe au lait" each morning at breakfast. This is a half a cup of strong coffee mixed with a half a cup of hot milk. This being Sunday, we also have a treat with our second cup of coffee which was a "Sneeuwwitje" (Snow White). It is a coconut cake with a powdered sugar topping.
I have been preparing my wooden lace bobbins for a new piece of lace I am going to start this week. Sunday evening watching a German country life program was the perfect way to get these bobbins wound with thread since I do it by hand. Lace bobbins are so pretty threaded in pairs. I have been working on a patchwork quilt top too which is just about done and ready to quilt.
We have spent this spring like weekend in the garden also. There are many things which have to be pruned back in the late winter. We also drove to a tree and shrub nursery to pick up our new hedge. We have planted 20 hawthorns along a section of our front garden to separate it with the neighbors. The garden had been originally designed as one large garden with theirs but we want our privacy as we enjoy sitting on the bench in the front garden to have coffee in the sun. We like it to feel more secluded and this should do the trick. We picked hawthorn as it is well loved by birds. Cats are not able to get to them there so easily with its long thorns. The tiny white blossoms are so pretty in the spring but the man we bought them from said it will not have them a plenty like when it is a tree form. We have to prune them a good deal for the first few years to encourage the full hedge growth. They are planted and have had their first prune. I cannot wait to see them start to show some leaves as they are just wood for now.
